Coronavirus Aid. Second round stimulus check USA

May 15, 2020

The House votes today on The Heroes Act—the latest stimulus relief bill that includes, among other things, a second round of $1,200 stimulus checks, $200 billion in hazard pay for essential workers and a six-month extension to the COVID-19 unemployment program.

The text of the bill, which spans more than 1,800 pages, includes assistance to state and local governments, hazard pay for frontline health care workers, forgiveness of student debt and bolstering Medicaid and Medicare. The bill is known as the Health and Economic Recovery Omnibus Emergency Solutions Act, or HEROES Act.

The bill includes provisions to assist farmers, protect renters and homeowners from evictions and foreclosures, and extend family and medical leave provisions previously approved by Congress. The legislation would also provide relief for essential workers, such as aviation, rail and Amtrak workers, as well as extend work visas for immigrants.

What aspects do most Americans and employees care about right now?

Americans—including the employed and unemployed—mostly want more stimulus checks, and they’ve had something to say about a second one-time stimulus check and the prospect of getting monthly stimulus checks.

For the first round of stimulus checks, an extra $500 is allowed for each child age 16 and younger. So, if enacted, the HEROES Act plan would provide more money for each additional family member and allow these extra payments for older children, elderly parents living with you, or anyone else who you support and can claim as a dependent.

Who will qualify for second stimulus check?

Just as with the first $1,200 stimulus check, eligibility is based on income. The income limits for the second check are the same as with the first. Individuals must earn $75,000 per year or less to receive the full payment, and married couples need to earn $150,000 or less per year for the full payment.  This second round provides the same $1,200 for all eligible members of a household, including children, up to a maximum $6,000 in payments for a family.

When will I get my stimulus check in the mail? You can track through the USPS

The US Postal Service can send you a notification when your payment is on the way if the IRS is mailing your paper check.

If you want to know when you'll receive your stimulus check from the post office if the the IRS is mailing your payment, you can have the postal service notify you on the day it will deliver it. Maybe you meet the requirements for a coronavirus payment but didn't set up direct deposit with the IRS, so a paper check is your only option there. Or perhaps you tried to track the payment through the IRS portal and saw a message that your check will arrive through snail mail, and you want to know when so you can budget for it.

Is it to late to file for a stimulus check?

If you don't receive a payment this year - or if you were due a larger payment than you received because of a new child, for example - the IRS said you can claim your allotted stimulus money next year by filing a 2020 tax return. The IRS said it can take up to 14 days to receive a payment if this is the case.
